Scholarship opportunities and how to find them

October 13th, 2008

With college education becoming more and more costly by the day, it is no wonder that many students are scouting for reducing the burden on their collegiate expenses even when they are still in school. A few years back, it was only the parents of the students who were keen on their children winning scholarships for their future educational pursuits; but now it is the students themselves who are making efforts to get merits such as college scholarships. This is a clear indication of the growing ambitiousness in the students of today.

College scholarships awarded to students are grants provided to them in order to pay for their education, especially their tuition fees. The scholarships could cover the entire tuition costs, or they might only cover a portion of the tuition fees. There are three main types of scholarships that are generally awarded.

The following are those three.

Academic Scholarships – These are the scholarships given to meritorious students, who have shown excellent performance in their previous academic life. The sponsors usually set some grades that the eligible candidates have to surpass, or they might even conduct tests for eligibility. Academic scholarships are indeed the most popular kinds of scholarships in the world today, and the highest ratio of students studying through scholarships have won academic scholarships. These scholarships are eligible for most online degree program courses as well as full-time college courses.

Athletic Scholarships – As the name suggests, athletic scholarships are provided to students who have proved some merit in sports activities. Here, the options are more since many sports are included in the list by sponsors. Though generally, people conducting online college program would accept students with athletic scholarships, the chances of getting these scholarships on fulltime college courses are higher.

Institutional Scholarships – These are scholarships that are provided by institutions for particular groups. Generally, they could be provided for minority religions, or to particular ethnic groups. In most cases, these scholarships will be valid for degree courses and online college programs that are conducted by the institutions themselves. Hence, in a way, the institutions undertake the full educational responsibilities of the meritorious students they have selected for the scholarships.
